Episode 14 - HOPE

Greetings All,
I HOPE your holiday season is going well. This time, I want to share with you some thoughts on HOPE. Leaders deal in hope. They deal in hope because hope is an emotional element that plays a significant role in the overall well being of the folks in an organization. Dealing in hope isn't the same thing as "being positive" or "having a positive attitude". It's being real, deliberate, visible and consistent in communicating and helping focus energy on what's within our control. We can't control the date and time when the economy will rebound, but what we can do is focus our concern on the things we can do to make sure we're giving 100% and not contributing to things (like worry) that remove us from delivering what we're here to deliver! ! !
HAPPY NEW YEAR -
See you in 2009!

Episode 13 - Contact

Hello Everyone!
The summer is over and I hope that everyone had a great few months. I'm hopeful that folks in Gulf area have weathered the intense challenge that Mother Nature has provided this summer, in a way that all are well and can begin the process of rebuilding. Haiti was particularly hit bad and my thoughts are there. I have put some links at the end of this post so that you can begin to lend a hand, either for US folks or folks in Haiti, in an informed way.

This episode is dedicated to the concept of CONTACT. All engagement begins with leaders making a decision to reach out and make contact - - with people, with projects, and even their own purpose!! Think about it. Everything you've experienced has been because you've made some degree of contact with whatever it is. The things you don't know a great deal about are the things that you've either never made contact with, or have made limited contact with. Why is that? Do we know? Maybe it's time to find out.
Peace,
JL

An email from a listener helps form this episode on SKILL & WILL. It's another opportunity to highlight how the Leadership Voice is really all we say and all we do. It's also the first time anyone has written me and referenced the NBC show "The Office". I wondered how long it might be until the world's finest example of an unaware soul inhabiting a leadership role would find its way into a correspondence. I happen to love that show - actually like the British and American versions Thanks again for the kind notes and the constructive feedback! Stay in touch!

Hello All - The second part of LEADERSHIP VOICE. At the highest level, it's all we say and all we do. In a way - it's our own personal leadership brand that we're talking about. This month, I finished a book by Fred Kofman called CONSCIOUS BUSINESS, and I highly recommend it. Let me know your thoughts on what has been shared to this point. I'd love to hear it.

Episode 9 - Who's Voice?

Hello All - After a bit of a delay, this podcast is dedicated to making sure that we are using OUR own voice to help manage change, communicate messages that are key to those we serve and their ability to execute with excellence. Leaders are called upon to deliver information that will help align those they serve with the direction of the overall organization, so, when you choose to give voice to that direction, does your team hear you or do they hear someone else's words passing through you? Seek to understand so that you are clear about what you're delivering. Ensure that what you're delivering is something you can find a way to support as if it were your idea, and if you just can't get there - a moment of truth is at hand - but when you understand clearly, and you're personally aligned with the direction, then use YOUR leadership voice to move things forward!!! You are pivotal in your organization!

Episode 8 - COMMUNITY

Happy Holiday Season All! Today we spend a little time on COMMUNITY. It's what got the Pilgrims through the toughest times - 3 months journey away from "home", and it's crucial to today's leadership journeys. If you're in an organization with other leaders and you're not reaching out to one another to leverage the combined experiences - you don't stand a chance in my opinion..... Oh - - you may survive for a while, but in today's environment that's the same as standing still and accepting the status quo. IF that's the case - enjoy it while you can. You're soon to be swept aside. So reach out to the community and leverage the power of the team. Don't know how to reach out? Pick up the phone and ask questions - even if it means having to preface the conversation with "I know we don't talk except when there's a crisis. . . . " let others know what you're doing - that you're working to build COMMUNITY - because after all - if you're not doing that as a leader - then you're missing on one of the fundamentals in my opinion. HOW ARE YOU BUILDING COMMUNITY? I'd like to know! JL

Update

Hello Folks,
You may now know that Episodes 1 and 2 ("Introduction" and "You May Be A Mindful Leader If..." ) have now been removed from the webpage. They won't be available via iTunes either. Sorry about that. When Podomatic crashed, I suspect the data corruption affected the audio files that made up these two episodes. I received some emails noting that audio quality was choppy and when I checked . . . . . it was choppy. I checked from a couple of different connections and times so it had to be the files. Unfortunately, I didn't backup those first files up ( I KNOW....shame on me......shame, shame....ok - no judging!)
My plan is to re-do them - and then sort of boil them both into one episode perhaps. I apologize, but will have something back up soon. Thanks for your patience.

Episode 7 - Dialogue

BACK FROM MEXICO....Man did I get sunburned!
I took some time with the family and I am recharged!
So = Now we're ready to dive into a little bit of DIALOGUE! Dialogue is an opportunity to explore new frontiers of understanding - - - and if we're not careful - - we'll find ourselves connecting in a whole new way. Old subjects are renewed when viewed through different lenses - which is the opportunity that having rich dialogue offers us! It is - indeed - a process to help us understand one another and to build something that we can share in common. Mindful leaders know that they are responsible for building an environment where dialogue is not only encouraged, but it's expected. Now excuse me as I shake the sand out of my.....shoes.
Peace!

EPISODE 6 - It's Always A Journey

Well.......it looks like PodOmatic has been stable at least a few days. We had a week long crash and so - to this weeks point - another step in the journey. This week is about why we call a leadership role a "JOURNEY". A great note from "J" in Pennsylvania sparks the topic this week. Leading isn't a job. A job is something that gets done. Leading is really never done. Like a book, a leader's journey is filled with chapters. Some are shorter than others. Some chapters are hard to look back on. Some chapters are fun....but the book itself is never finished. I think that's what leading is like. I do think that one can outgrow a leader along the journey. I'm convinced that I've outgrown some leaders I have had. I am also convinced that just when I thought I was far enough along on my own journey, I ought to have been paying closer attention AND it comes to light that the leader I thought I outgrew had much more to teach! That's why this is all a "journey", my new friend, "J", becuase it's all linked together and it has to be experienced and lived - - - not punched in and out of.
Until next time - PEACE!

<itunes:summary>Well.......it looks like PodOmatic has been stable at least a few days. Until next time - PEACE!

Episode 5 - REACT and RESPONSE

This episode was originally posted in the first week of October 2007. I am reposting due to Podomatic having a 5+ day crash of their system and all of the posted episodes were lost - along with the first two episodes.

This episode is concerned with REACTING and RESPONDING. Maybe it's semantics to some - ok - maybe most - and then again, maybe it's helpful to be aware that some situations call for a reaction and others demand a response, and being aware of what's being called for is the first half of the battle - then how we react or respond will determine the quality of what comes next!!!!
Peace,
Jerry

Episode 3 - Reflect! And Be Recognized

Sorry for the inconvenience with the crash this week, but here's the re-post of the episode.

- This episode is dedicated to the effort that all leaders would do well to look into - - - - REFLECTION. Take the time to look into the thing that you can affect most - YOU!
That which is practiced is developed. What is developed becomes a skill and application of skills builds competence - so - I would love to see folks - especially leaders - take some time each day to look at what they did, what they said, and then understand WHY - and then develop a plan accordingly. RECHARGE your battery! REFLECT!
